Victoria was exhausted. Not just physically but mentally too. The war that was waged on that island had her spent. But she knew better than anything that she wasn't satisfied with her performance on the island itself. Sure, she won some battles and lost some, but she just couldn't shake the feeling that she could've been better. [break][break]

Besides...that last encounter with that deserter, Isaac Merlo, left a bitter taste in her mouth. She didn't enjoy having her shortcomings poked at. Especially by some arrogant stranger that believed they even knew half the struggle she'd gone through. "Tch." she sucked her teeth as she made her way towards the med bay in a huff.[break][break]

She'd heard a friend of her's landed himself in the medical bay after the events on that island. But she wasn't just here to check up and see if he was okay. After getting caught up to speed on the current comings and goings of rocket HQ, she realized this 'old friend' would be her best bet if she was looking to grow stronger.[break][break]

"No more repeats..." she grumbled to herself. No more repeats of that incident on the beach with that deserter. Not only was it uncomfortable but it was humiliating. She'd suffer it no longer. With a deep breath she pushed the door open and walked the patients room like she owned the place. (A parallel to how she used to barge into his room when they were children.)[break][break]

"....Damn you look like shit." As brutally honest as always. Some things just don't change.[break][break]

Tori made her way further into the room before comfortably plopping herself on the edge of jayden cross's hospital bed. She handed him a small box of fruit assortments that she'd brought as a 'get-well-soon' gift. Crossing her legs she tilted her head to the side, purple locks spilling over her shoulders. "Who roughed you up like this, bud?"

After the battle on the mirage island, Jayden - like many other Rockets - had returned to the medbay. It was a precautionary measure, for them to test him again after the healing committed by bryan delarosa. It sped up his normal recovery process, which seemed to be made only faster by the fact that Jayden's own body had endured enough in his lifetime to be able to be used to these sorts of trends.

[break][break] Or at least that was Jayden's working theory. In reality, neither he nor the scientists seemed to understand much depth about how his connection to Chien Pao impacted him, outside of what was obvious.

[break][break] The door blasted open and he almost expected the sight of Elisabeth Fiorelli to greet him. She had been somewhat instrumental in his transformation thus far, the two of them tied together by their mutual suffering.

[break][break] However, the person that greeted him had hair the color of plums, not softened blond.

[break][break] "You don't look much better," he commented, even though he knew it to be a lie. He pushed himself upright to inspect the box of fruit that Victoria Beckett supplied him with.

[break][break] Deflecting her question, Jayden opened the box and plucked a chocolate-covered strawberry from it's contents. He chewed on the end of it.

Tori raised an eyebrow at him before scoffing, a light smirk tugging at the corner of her lips. "Oh no! You got me! How will I ever recover?" Victoria responded, her voice dripping with obvious sarcasm. Violet hues watched as he pulled himself up before helping himself to her gift. He didn't respond to her question, but she didn't find herself surprised by that either.[break][break]

Her smirk widened at his own inquiry of her. Reaching forward she plucked a grape from his box of fruit assortments and popped it into her mouth before humming in delight. "Mmm, some things just don't change, isn't that right Jayden?" Her face scrunched up in a smug grin as she continued. "You're still as boring as ever."[break][break]

Though there were certainly some things that were different about him now that made up for that. So, that statement wasn't completely true. Since he felt the need to dodge her questions she figured she'd repay him in kind. Besides it wasn't that important anyway. "We're friends right?" she asked before swiftly continuing. "Of course, we are." she didn't even give him the time to respond.[break][break]

"Friends help each other out when they're in need, right?" Leaning forward, her facial expression shifted to something more serious. "So help me out. I need to get stronger, Jay." Her gaze stayed locked with his, after all she was quite serious about this.

[break][break] her sarcasm is lost on him. he simply stares blankly at him, and for a moment, it is like they are once again just trainees within rocket's kantonian hierarchy, left wandering, because both their parental figures are nowhere to be found.

[break][break] he moves, indulging in a sweet treat. her barbed comment about being boring doesn't strike him like thorns — in fact, it has the opposite effect. his expression softens, almost as if such a thing is an endearment between them both.

[break][break] "i suppose not. you don't change either," he quips back. "always chasing after me."

[break][break] for one way or another, at least.

[break][break] however, such nostalgia wears away as she finally brings forth the topic of why she approached him to begin with. his eyes sharpen, pulling the strawberry stem from his mouth as he looks towards her.

The million dollar money question. Part of Tori's pride wanted to admit she didn't want any help at all. But at this point she was more desperate than prideful. The losses she'd suffered recently stung a bit more than she would like. She needed some serious training and if her father wasn't going to be the one to do it, she'd find help elsewhere.[break][break]

"I heard about a program here, S.P.E.C.T.R.A. was it?" She said as she crossed her arms over her chest. "That would be a good start. I think that program could server as proper training for me." She said with a tilt of her head as she glanced back at Jayden. "But I'm not exactly sure what process I need to under go to get it."[break][break]

She sniped another fruit from his present and grinned as she popped it in her mouth. "That's where you come in of course," She leaned closer to him as she continued to talk. "Of course, you could also help me with training too. You are a big shot now, right?" Turning the theatrics up a not she clasped her hands together and flashed her best 'puppy-dog-eyes' at him.[break][break]

He was unfazed by her pleading, typical, but the way his gaze shifted had Victoria pause, if only for just a moment. He lectured her on just what SPECTRA was and how her views were misconstrued. At the notion that not just anyone can get into SPECTRA's pearly gates she huffed, blowing her hangs up and out of her eyes for a moment.[break][break]

Of course it wouldn't be easy, she figured that but still...[break][break]

Jayden's look softened on her as the next words out of his mouth caught Victoria off guard. "but you are not just anyone, victoria beckett." he might not be aware but his words were a double-edged sword. She truly wasn't just anyone. which is exactly why her performance matter so much. If she embarrassed herself it could reflect badly on her father.[break][break]

Tori gripped the hemp of her jacket tightly. anxiety began to wrack her small frame. If Jayden couldn't help her then she wasn't sure who could. Just when she had been about to convince herself to come up with some sort of backup plan he spoke again to confirm he could help her out.[break][break]

Tori couldn't help the sigh of relief that escaped her lips. It was like a thousand years worth of weight was lifted from her shoulders in an instant. "Thank you." she muttered softly. She really meant that. This...all of this wasn't easy for her. "it's not like you." he poked, his expression twisted into an annoying borderline sneer. "usually you're more confident than this."[break][break]

"Tch. What would you know?" she huffed in annoyance as she crossed her arms over her chest and tore her gaze from him. But his words held some truth to him. Normally she would be way too proud to grovel at his feet like this but...she was desperate. She didn't want him to see her like this either. After her encounter with that deserter, Isaac Merlo, Tori just hadn't been the same. No, perhaps she'd never been okay.[break][break]

The second abandonment from her father was what started it. The Blood Moon Ursaluna incident didn't put her in a much better spot either. Then the whole island and the losses she had to swallow there just put her in a pit. Tori was weak. And this....this revelation terrified her to her core. Even now her hands began to shake...just barely.[break][break]

She hated feeling like this. She stood to her feet with her gaze cast down. She didn't want him to see her like this. "...Just tell me what I need to do." her tone was dry, barely above a whisper but she was sure he would hear her.

Jayden mentions her absence and Tori sucks in a sharp breath. It was an instant throat punch reminder of what she had endured once more from the man that claimed he was 'protecting' her. Funny how that worked out. The one who was supposed to look out for her was the one who usually hurt her the most.[break][break]

Her lips were sealed on the matter though. If she uttered a single word she felt like that would mean finally admitting the truth and she couldn't bring herself to do that. It was hard enough to come here and beg Jayden for help. But to be expected to come clean with everything was just...asking for way too much.[break][break]

He went on to drab about some combat assessment or another. To be honest, she was half paying attention at this point. Not because she meant him ill but rather, her thoughts had begun to spiral and put her in a dark place once more. It took everything within her to hold it together in front of him right now.[break][break]

Then came his question. As if right on time. The final straw that broke the proverbial camel's back.[break][break]

Tori bit her lip so hard she felt the familiar taste of iron flood her mouth. There was a stinging behind her eyes that alerted her to the high chance that she might just start crying right here in the middle of Jay's medical room. "If I knew the answer to that question I wouldn't be here!"[break][break]

Her words came out shaky and in more of a yell than she had really meant them to be. "Fuck." she mumbled as her hands flew to her face in attempt to hide herself from her oldest childhood friend. He wouldn't understand what she was going through. She could only imagine how confused he was. She didn't mean to take it out on him but his habit of piercing right through to the heart of the problem was just too much for her right now. [break][break]

For the first time in forever Victoria felt smaller than she ever had. She wished she could disappear. She normally was the the picture book definition of a 'hard-ass'. She rarely ever crumbled, especially in front of other's. But she'd been running from the truth for so long and she was so damn...afraid that she was about to losing everyone and everything she had ever cared for. [break][break]

Or rather...from the darkest depths of her being came the bone chilling realization that perhaps those that she clung to so dearly never viewed her as precious from the start.

His lack of a response was both expected and somehow disappointing at the same time.[break][break]

Tori tiled her head back as a sharp forced laugh escaped her lips. That's right, what had she really been expecting? All of this was too familiar. And yet...despite the familiarity, she still had felt the sting of pain in her chest. He reminded her of her father and that's what made her sick to her stomach.[break][break]

Emotions had no place in discussions of logical analysis. Victoria repressed another scoff as she quickly bit back the bitterness that was threatening to spill forth even more than it already had. When she finally lowered her hand from her face those hot tears had dried and her gaze was just a shadow of what it once was.[break][break]

The life, the sparkle, the fire that had once been evident in those violet pulls was nothing more than faded nothingness now. She was so tired...of all of this.[break][break]

After a long moment of silence as she recentered herself, Tori finally spoke. "Perhaps it's my arrogance. Or perhaps it's my handling of my pokemon." Tori's tone was exasperated yet clear. When she turned back to Jayden it looked as if she was adopting his own mannerisms now in how frigid she had become. "Especially when it comes in the form of combating avatars." She added. "Is that satisfactory enough for you, Admin Cross?" It wasn't his fault. She knew that, yet she couldn't help it. The venom that spilled from her lips was no longer hers to repress. "If that's all, may I be excused now?"
